I'm a Computer Science graduate who builds and maintains TipItSmart — every calculation is transparent, and every factual claim about U.S. tipping law or tax rules (like the "No Tax on Tips" provisions) is sourced directly from IRS.gov and DOL.gov, with citations linked right on the page.

Why We Built This

I built TipItSmart because I kept running into the same frustrating moment at the end of a meal: everyone at the table staring at their phones, fumbling with a slow app or a cluttered website, trying to figure out a fair tip before the server comes back. Most tipping calculators online feel like relics from the early 2000s — overloaded with ads, full of pop-ups, and barely usable on a mobile network.

I wanted to build something that loads in under a second, works perfectly on any phone without an app install, and does exactly one job — calculating tips clearly and correctly. No sign-ups. No data collection. No bloat. Just a tool that respects your time and your privacy.

What TipItSmart Does

TipItSmart is a suite of free, specialised tip calculators covering the most common tipping situations people encounter every day:

• Restaurant tips — split the bill evenly, handle rounding, and factor in tax
• Delivery tips — calculate fair tips for food delivery drivers based on order size and distance
• Hair salon & nail salon tips — standard service industry recommendations with custom adjustment
• Bartender tips — per-drink and per-tab tipping for bar visits
• Rideshare tips — Uber and Lyft guidance based on ride length and service quality
• Hotel tips — bellhops, housekeeping, concierge, and valet guidance
• Massage therapist tips — spa and medical massage etiquette
• Movers tips — how much to tip a moving crew based on job size
• Tattoo artist tips — studio etiquette and percentage-based recommendations
• Dog groomer tips — appropriate amounts for grooming services
• Tax & tip calculator — handles tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive totals together

Every calculator runs entirely in your browser. There is no backend server processing your inputs — the moment you type a number, the result appears instantly, with zero round-trip to any server.

Our Design Philosophy

TipItSmart was designed from scratch with a clear set of principles:

• Speed first. Every page is statically generated and served over a global CDN. There is no server-side rendering delay — the HTML is pre-built and cached at the edge.
• Mobile first. The majority of people check the tip at the table on their phone. Every layout was designed for small screens before being adapted to desktop.
• Privacy first. We do not collect your name, email address, or calculation inputs. The only data processed by third parties is standard analytics (page views, session length) and advertising cookies — both of which are disclosed in ourPrivacy Policy.
• Accessibility first. All interactive controls are keyboard-accessible, include proper ARIA labels, and maintain sufficient colour contrast in both light and dark modes.

Tipping in the United States — Why It Matters

Tipping is a deeply embedded part of the service economy in the United States. For millions of restaurant servers, bartenders, delivery drivers, and salon workers, tips represent the majority — sometimes all — of their take-home income. Federal law permits tipped employees to be paid a base wage as low as $2.13 per hour, with the expectation that customer gratuities will bring earnings up to at least the federal minimum wage.

Yet tipping norms vary significantly by industry, region, and context. What counts as a generous tip at a fast-casual counter versus a fine-dining restaurant is very different. TipItSmart takes the guesswork out of that decision by providing context-aware recommendations for each service type — not just a one-size-fits-all percentage slider.

How the Site Is Funded

TipItSmart is completely free to use with no premium tier, no subscription, and no locked features. The site is supported by advertising — standard, non-intrusive display advertisements that appear on the page. These ads help cover hosting, domain, and development costs so the tools can remain free for everyone.
